You as the customer should receive satisfactory service. I thoroughly believe that clients of an information broker should demand quality service. For this reason, I have suggested only a few of the most noted. I have not worked with all of those on the list of information brokers below, but I have included them so you can check them out for yourself. These guidelines should have include:
1. The broker should be in business five years or more. This can sometimes waived if the company is duly licensed by the state in which they conduct business. For example, a licensed private investigator in California is checked out on criminal files, tested, and answerable to the State of California's Consumer Affairs Department.
2. The broker should have a professional private investigator's license or be a member of the Information Industry Association (IIP) or the Association Independent Information Providers (AIIP).
3. A responsible firm will also check you out - that you are in business. A company that does this as a matter of policy is well managed and responsible and will be likely to do what they say.
I believe in quality in this business and will not recommend anyone that does not meet the few simple guidelines found above.
The oldest association of information specialists is the Information Industry Association (IIA), at 555 New Jersey Avenue, Suite 880, Washington, DC 20001, telephone (202) 639-8262 and at http://wwwinfoindustry.org. This includes a distinguished membership, The American Stock Exchange, Barron's, America On Line, etc. This organization works closely with the US Government in support of industry interests and is considered the most prestigious of the information associations.
I also like the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP). Its code of ethics is outstanding. You can find out more about this organization and its code of ethics at http://www.aiip/~aiip. Begun in 1987, this organization now claims over 800 members. The organization provides an exchange of information to medium and small companies within the information industry.
